Deep Purple founder John Lord dead at age 71.

John Lord founded Deep Purple in 1968  and was with Deep Purple though 1976 and then again in 1984 until he retired from the group in 2002 .  He was a legendary key board player who co-wrote the band’s huge hit, Smoke on the Water“. He was also went on to have a very successful career with Whitesnake from 1978 to 1984.

today, Monday 16th July at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. and was fortunately surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

His website obituary notes that he was best known for his Orchestral work Concerto for Group & Orchestra first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 and conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold, a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.

In 2003, Deep Purple founder John Lords, returned to his beloved Rhythm and Blues and recorded an album of standards in Sydney, with Australia’s Jimmy Barnes and released a DVD Live at the Basement, by Jon Lord and the Hoochie Coochie Men. which has been billed my many of his fans as, “one of the best blues shows”. The show was filmed  in 2003 at a Sidney blues joint called “The Basement” and is over 120 minutes of the best good old classic Blues that  you can find. Lord also keeps fans entertained with “amusing little stories”, in between performances.

Jon Lord was married to Vickie Lord and he leaves behind two daughters, Amy, with Vickie, and his other daughter Sara who he had with his first wife Judith Feldman, to whom he was married from 1969 to 1981.

The world loses another great artist with John Lord dead at 71.  Rest in Peace John Lord.
