Yesterday, we told you about how Holly Robinson Peete was upset at 50 Cent for the autistic comment he had made on twitter. Today, the movie Ted and als reference causes outrage among those suffering friom ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig\’s Disease, is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease hat affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg’s character in the movie, “John”, says to his teddy bear friend, “From one man to another, I hope you get Lou Gehrig’s disease”.

The movie Ted and als reference really infuriated als suffers.

Randy Pipkin, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2005 and told ABCNews,

I didn’t expect to go to a movie and sit with an audience laughing at the expense of people with ALS.  I think the message this film sends out is a huge slap in the face to people dying from this horrific disease

On facebook, Jess Lester, an ALS patient from Lebanon, Mo. wrote an open letter to Wahlberg and “Ted” writer Seth MacFarlane.  He wrote,

This line from Ted is something that never should have been said much less survived the editing process for a major movie release especially as a punch line for a comedy

So just how far is too far?  Why are some topics considered “taboo” to even joke about while we all know that there are plenty of topics out there offending someone somewhere?

Has social media gone too far? Are we becoming a society of “power of the people” via social media? Are certain groups of people simply more “vocal” and therefore are able to gather others in protest quickly?

If the movie Ted and als reference causes outrage, will these type of protests continue inother area?  Is it a good thing?

It certainly is a double edged sword.  Perhaps I am still feeling nostalgic because of Independence Day.

I do know that in order to keep the freedom that we are so fortunate to have, than we have to accept the fact that people will continue to say and do things that might offend some.  That is, unless we want to to trade in all of our liberties, live in a robotic, not free society and give in to censorship.

I really would like to believe that movie Ted and als reference wasn’t mean to offend. It seems that so many times these “offenders” don’t really mean to offend intentionally and for whatever misguided reasons they have, they either say something that is considered offensive or worse yet include a line in a movie that offends others.  Do you really think that the the writers of “Ted” intentionally set out to offend people afflicted with Lou Gehrig’s disease?

I know that sentiment alone may not be enough.

Take Stephanie for example.  She’s a reader I heard from yesterday that was so upset at 50 cent’s twitter comments about autism that she created a website called This is what Autism Looks Like.   Stephanie wrote about what she hopes to achievel  She said,

I want to show people what autism really looks like. I want to educate. I want to promote tolerance and acceptance.

I think the world as a whole could use some tolerance and acceptance.  Don’t you?
