Why are celebrities attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner?

Disgraced druggie starlet, Linday Lohan, fresh from a night out partying, missed her scheduled flight to Washington for the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA)  Dinner.  She was supposed to be on the flight with actor and sometimes activist, George Clooney.  Don’t fret.  Word is she’ll still make it.  But wait it gets better.  Lindsay Lohan and longtime nemesis Kim Kardashian are supposed to be seated across from each other at tonight’s dinner turned events because they are both guests of Fox News. Oh, the drama! Megan McCain is now calling out Great Van Susteren of Fox News for bringing Lohan as her date.

What is wrong with the picture and more importantly,  Why are celebrities attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner?

Just from the sound of it, the term “correspondents” conjures up images of journalistic professionalism.

The WHCA website states:

The WHCA represents the White House press corps in its dealings with the administration on coverage-related issues.

A nine-member board of directors, elected by correspondents, addresses access to the chief executive; coverage arrangements; work space arrangements; logistics and costs for press travel to accompany a president on the road. Information about our OFFICERS and BOARD MEMBERS is available on our site.

The association also holds an ANNUAL DINNER to raise money for WHCA SCHOLARSHIPS and honor the professional recipients of the WHCA’s JOURNALISM AWARDS. The next WHCA dinner is scheduled for April 28, 2012. Proceeds from the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner go toward scholarships and awards that recognize aspiring and accomplished journalists. Auctions and raffles of W.H.C.A.

It should be a embarrassment to the WHCA that the focus of the dinners has rapidly degraded throughout the years and gone Hollywood overshadowing the intended purpose of the dinner which is to “honor the professional recipients”.

Alexandra Petri at the Washington Post shared her opinion as well.

Who knows maybe some good will come of it.  Perhaps Greta Van Susteren will take Lohan under her wing, introduce her to the Church of Scientology (Lord knows she needs religion) and straighten her out.

Only time will tell.
