Dorothy McGuire of McGuire Sisters fame dies at 84

Dorothy McGuire of McGuire Sisters fame dies at 84. She was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and age related dementia and passed away at her  son’s home Paradise Valley, AZ.

Dorothy was the oldest sister of the signing trio.

The McGuire Sisters, comprised of real-life sisters Dorothy, Christine and Phyllis shot to fame in 50’s and 60’s having #1 hits with the songs Sincerely and Sugartime.

The McGuire Sisters often compared to the Andrew Sisters, originally retired in 1968 and then got back together in 1986.

They most recently appeared on a PBS special called Magic Moments – Best of 50’s Pop and performed for five Presidents of the United States; Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush and for Queen Elizabeth II.

The sister that is often mentioned the most is Phyliis McGuire who resides in Las Vegas.

Phyllis McGuire Sam Giancana connection

She was linked to mobster Sam Giancana and that association led to the group being blacklisted.

Sam Giancana reportedly told reporters outside a courthouse in the 1960’s that “Phyllis knows everything” about the rumored, unethical behaviors of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert.

Phyllis lived in a mansion in a Las Vegas for decades that many speculated was due to Sam Giancana’s money.

When she was asked by Barbara Walters during a 1980s ABC-TV “20/20” interview from within the mansion if the money came from Giancana, Phyllis denied it and said that she invested heavily in oil when the sisters were at the height of their popularity.In her later years, she hooked up with deceased colorful Vegas World Casino owner Bob Stupak

Dorothy McGuire has been married for  for 53 years to wealthy oilman Lowell Williamson and actually went by the name Dorothy McGuire Williamson.

Dorothy’s daughter-in-law, Karen Williamson, told ABC News,

They were a talent at a time when you had to have talent – -it couldn’t be done as it is now

How very true – just think Britney Spears!

She is survived by her husband, two sons, her daughter-in-law, two step children and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for September 15 at Valley Presbyterian Church in paradise Valley.
